Incident Overview

Location:Â Hilly areas near Meppadi Grama Panchayat, (Chooralmala, Mundakkai, Attamala), Wayanad district, Kerala
Type:Â Multiple landslides
Impact:Â Significant loss of life, widespread damage to property, several villages isolated, One school is under the debris, two schools partially collapsed and hundreds of people trapped. Many roads have collapsed, a bridge has been swept away and several areas have become unreachable.
Situation Update
Casualties:Â At least 400 confirmed dead, with the number expected to rise. More than 150 people are missing. according to the reports, 50 hectares of cardamom,100 hectares of coffee,70 hectares of pepper, 55 hectares of tea,10 hectares of cocunut,15 hectares of arecanut and 10 hectares of banana crops have been washed away.
Causes of the Landslide:Â Recent weather patterns, such as continuous heavy rainfall for two days that contributed to soil instability.
Impact: The landslide resulted in several fatalities and injuries. It also caused significant property damage, including the destruction of homes and infrastructure. Roads and access routes were blocked, hindering rescue and relief operations.
Displacement: Hundreds of residents have been displaced, with two temporary shelters set up to accommodate them. Relief agencies are working to provide essential supplies and medical care. One shelter is in danger since it is close to the landslide area.
Government action: The Kerala government, along with national disaster management agencies, is coordinating the response efforts. Financial aid and resources are being allocated to affected families and communities.
Rescue Efforts:
Massive rescue operations are underway involving NDRF, Army, and local authorities.

Challenges:Â Heavy rainfall continues to hinder rescue efforts. The destruction of a bridge in Chooralmala town causes difficulty in reaching the spot and rescue operations.Â
Assessment : The situation remains critical with a high number of casualties and widespread destruction. Rescue operations are ongoing, but challenges posed by the terrain and weather conditions are significant. There is a high probability of further landslides due to the ongoing rainfall.
Recommendations
Prioritize rescue and relief efforts.
Distribute relief materials such as food kits and WASH kits.Â
Establish temporary shelters for displaced residents.
Provide immediate medical aid to the injured.
Conduct a comprehensive damage assessment to plan for rehabilitation.
Consider long-term measures for slope stabilization and disaster preparedness.
