Koraga

Introduction

This anthropological documentation explores the cultural practices, historical background, and current challenges faced by the Koraga community, residing in Kasargod District, Kerala. The Koraga people are also found in adjoining areas of Karnataka state. The name "Koraga" is believed to have originated from their worship of the sun, as "Kora" means sun in their language.

Geographic Distribution

The Koraga community is primarily distributed in the village of Panoor within Kasargod District, Kerala, along with neighboring areas in Karnataka state.

Historical Background

In the past, the Koraga community had a region under Hubashika Raja, signifying a glorious history. However, they later faced enslavement under their rulers, enduring a difficult period. Notably, in 1913, ninety families living in Pavoor Colony embraced Christianity.

Social Structure and Leadership

The Koraga people live in "Mathadi" (settlements), with their social and cultural practices overseen by a headman known as "Koppu" or "Guru Kara." The community had a council of elders responsible for decision-making and administering punishments.

 Traditional Livelihoods

The Koragas are skilled in basketry and weaving various items like winnowing fans, cradles, and baskets. They collect raw materials such as bamboos, canes, and creepers from nearby forests to support these crafts.

Current Challenges

Presently, the Koraga community faces severe health problems, highlighting the need for focused attention on their well-being and development.
